Close Skype to system tray

If you’re a regular Skype user you may have noticed that it has this annoying behaviour that the close button doesn’t actually close Skype, but instead stays in your taskbar.

I’m sure I’m not alone when I want a close button to actually close a program, and not just minimize it (I mean, there is already minimize button!).

Here is a workaround that will allow you to close Skype to the system tray area and get it out of your taskbar.

How to close Skype to the system tray

  1. Browse to: C:\Program Files\Skype\Phone, look for Skype.exe, right click it and open properties.
  2. Change to the “Compatibility” tab and check the “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and select “Windows XP (Service Pack 3).
  3. This will allow Skype to run fully closed and only be active/shown as an icon in the taskbar, not as a minimized window.

Alternatively you should have this option in Skype under Tools > Options > Advanced:

Keep-Skype-taskbar-option
