Turn your PC into a WiFi hotspot

You can turn your Windows PC into a WiFi hotspot with a little bit of technical know-how, and also share this connection with other users. This is great for travelling on business, or when you are experiencing modem troubles – turn your computer into a wireless hotspot and connect to the internet.

To be able to do this you need a wireless adapter which supports hosted networks. To see if your adapter supports hosted networks, type netsh wlan show drivers, and scroll down to “Hosted network supported” and see if it says “Yes.”

Step 1

Open the command interface as admin. You can do this by pressing the Windows key + R and entering cmd.

The Run dialog window
The Run dialog window

Step 2

Enter the following into the command window.

netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=NetworkName key=12345678

In this example your SSID or network name will be called NetworkName. You can rename this to whatever you would like to call your wireless network. Also, the password in this example is “12345678”, you should update this to something more secure.

Then type the following to start the network:

netsh wlan start hostednetwork
Command window after the above commands were entered

Step 3

Go to Network and Sharing Center in the Control Panel, and click on your main network, go to Properties. Click the sharing tab and select “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection”

Now allow other network users to connect through the computer’s internet connection

You should now be able to connect to the computer’s wireless connection you just created and be able to browse the internet.
