Simple WordPress page breadcrumbs

For good looking semantic navigation  you will sometimes want to make use of breadcrumb navigation somewhere on your page.

This technique is often seen on shopping websites to remind the user where they are exactly, but can also be useful in other contexts.

I couldn’t find a working function that would list the parent page link and current page name, and I didn’t want to use a plugin, so I wrote my own function. Here’s the code!

WordPress breadcrumbs function

Place this code in your functions.php file:

Shortcode

Shortcode to use in your page template:

the_breadcrumb

You can style the outputted list with CSS (float or display inline, either way works nicely).

Note that this function will only display one level deep in WordPress.
